Finished Project: The Monster Dress Part 2- Early 60s Mail Order Pattern

Image
Que Tal Amigos? I have not had much time for sewing lately, but I do have two handmade vestidos to post. This is an early 60's mail order pattern with a large collar and a contrasting skirt yoke and button detail.  I am posing on this antique store find that I brought home last week.  For the skirt yoke, I actually made the princess skirt sloper, as usual, but just created a fake yoke that lays on top of it. I folded under the bottom round part of the yoke and top stitched it down. It looks like a real yoke, but with less drafting work.  This is the last of the scrap Alexander Henry Universal Monster fabric that I have. I had it stashed and when I saw this blue stretch poplin at Hancock Fabrics, I knew this was the dress I was going to make.  There is a button in the center of the skirt yoke for decoration, I used my Mema's button stash and picked up these black buttons with shiny fake rhinestone.  The brooch is a yard sale find. I got my low lights redone last week and I love

Vintage Chubbies Series Returns

Image
A while back I started posting photos of fat women in black and white photos To celebrate the fact that women come in all shapes and sizes and that we can be glamorous just as we are. Most of what we see in vintage Hollywood is gorgeous, but what is missing is the plus size heroine. Today I am sharing one from my personal collection. I found this chubby flapper in a box of old fotos. I call her Maude and she sits on my vanity mirror. She inspires me very much in her beaded drop waist dress and her fur wrap! What a looker Maude is! She and I are going to get a gin and tonic at the local joint and then belt out some sultry blues while we make those silly men swoon over our curvy gams! Hey, anyone got a light for our cigars?

I Have Developed a Taste for Anne Adams Patterns

Image
Out of all the beautiful designer/pattern companies, I think I have the most love for Anne Adams. Her mail order patterns date all the way back to the 30s.  She has the most feminine and adorable design lines. I am attracted to them like bees to honey hahah. faux cape! Her pinafores are MY FAVORITE! And also dear to my heart is the amount of ric rac that she applies LOL If it has scallops on it: it's most likey an Anne Adams. I started collecting her patterns about 2 years ago. Her patterns were bought through the mail and advertised in the newspaper. The mail order system allowed  many larger ladies to sew beautiful clothes, and these patterns are pretty easy to find on the market. Most of mine have the names and addresses still on the envelope. You talk about identity theft? Well old patterns have plenty of I.D. on them LOL. The woman really could work a yoke, too. I adore it!  It's a bit of a thriller too, very little is known about the pattern company itself, and the design

Word Verification- Just Say "Hell No"

Image
Our lives are complicated. They are full of passwords, and security forms, and the awful, EVIL " CAPTCHA " WHAT THE F???? I used to leave lovely comments of encouragement all over the webs! But now, years of comment captcha verifications to "prove I'm not a robot" (WTF like anyone couild ever doubt that fact!) have taken their toll and I STOPPED commenting your beautiful dresses, baby socks, vintage treasures, and the like.... This is my plea to ask you you to join me in ridding the world of the EVIL CAPTCHA! Go to your profile settings and remove word verifications! You can leave comment approval on, just help a sista out here. Years from now, on the radio, I will hear that the average person spends 3 hours a year filling out CAPTCHAS....and there will be much sadness.  JOIN THE FIGHT! I know a lot more than a few other bloggers are in the same camp- you will have wonderful, creative, well fashioned CAPTCHA Anarchists on your side Thanks for Reading and Comment

These are the things I have been enjoying! (aka old junk and sewing)

Tengo una vida loca, but I like it that way! I have a completed dress to show you soon, and a sneek peak at a what's on my sewing table right now. But I must share a few things with you that I have been enjoying!  I changed my hair. I put low lights in. I used Wella Color Charm level 7, a medium blonde. You guys probably figured out that I am a hair nerd, and I am always changing. This is actually my latest finished project, but you can only see part of it! You have to be good putas and wait. old phone                                                What the hell is this? Let me explain. We went on that trip to the Poconos and on the way home we stopped in Emmitsburg at an antique mall. I bought some really, really nice junk. This is a line man's pole Bell Telephone test set from the 1950s. He clipped this to his belt, went up the pole, and clipped onto the wires and was able to make test calls (or listen in on a line!). The rotary dial has the old number scheme of letters an
