Finished Project: Liz Taylor Goes to Japan Dress- Late 50s Style

Image
Liz Taylor you say? I imagine she would be the perfect model for this dress. Her raven hair would be perfect for it.  If you watched my last couple videos, you got plenty of info on how I altered the pattern. Now here is the modeling session! My hair was being a total pendejo on my photo shoot day     Isn't this just the most beautiful fabric you have ever seen? The buttons are from my Grandmother's button stash. There were exactly the right amount of buttons! I thought they looked like jade. Original pattern has a princess seam skirt. I opted to make this with a 1/4 circle skirt. Too much print matching God I love this dress! Did I tell you I had to go to two different fabric stores (Joanne Fabrics) to buy enough fabric? The first store had 3 yards and they were all chopped up in to 1 yard sections =-/ The second store had a continuous bolt. There is a center front seam on the skirt. You can see it close up. We had to come inside to take a descent hair picture. Sometimes my he

Why it bothers me when you call me "rockabilly" or "pinup"

So in the world of massive problems this is like the smallest nit picky thing, but often when people meet me for the first time they say things like "Oh you are a Rockabilly Chick!" and "Oh you look like a pinup girl!" and actually believe it or not "Oh you are a pinup model!" and a even smaller younger set of people have told me that I am "psychobilly."  (Which I must admit would fit most of what I wear and like) These labels bother me. I know, I know they don't mean anything by it..... Which is why I don't make a big deal, but I wanted to point something out.... Why? Why does it matter what people say? Mostly because it implies that I dress the way I do in order to fit in or be part of a particular group- that you label as Rockabilly or Pinup. That IS NOT why I dress in 40s and 50s dresses and style my hair with pin curls. I hate that people always want to label. And even worse, they want to TELL me what my label is. I look the way I do

I cheered myself up this week by buying these two fantastic prints! Adoroable Michael Miller 50s Americana print: with aistream trailers, plymouth convertibles and cadillacs. Perfect for a 50s sundress! I have already started the fitting process for this dress! See the pattern with the blue dress/jacket? That is the sundress with collar/cuff that I am working on. I will be looking for a contrast collar to make the collar/cuff with. I am thinking of using a creamy yellow. And get a load of this Robert Kaufman fabric! I AM IN LOVE! I was having such a horrible day......I was crying at my desk....and I saw this fabric after browsing http://www.robertkaufman.com/ I bought this at http://www.beverlys.com/fabric.html IT MADE MY DAY! I will be making a "waitress" type dress with this. Similair to this one: I will need lots of buttons! And a contrast fabric. Which color would you choose for the pocket and yoke for the bowling dress? And how about the trailer dress? BTW- THE BLONDIE D

Finished Project: Early 60s Sundress

Image
I found a early 60s pattern for a Sundress and Jacket in an antique store a few months ago. It was a size 42 bust, so I bought it for $5. It's a pretty standard pattern, the only detail being a fake button closure on both shoulders. This is a perfect comfortable sundress pattern that can be casual and formal. It has a jacket that I have not made yet  I cut my own bangs. For the last 2 years I have had the same haircut, but I go back and forth between U shaped bangs and long bangs.  The material is quilting cotton. The front is a red dice print, I made my husband a shirt from it 2 years ago and had a yard left.  I attached my standard half circle skirt pattern  The neckline and arm holes are faced with red cotton  The button looks functional, but it's a fake. The little tab is sewn inside the shoulder seam, and then a button hole is made in the tab. Then a button is sewn onto the shoulder. You can unbutton it, but it doesn't remove the strap like it looks it would. Very cle
