The Leopard Collar 30s Dress for my Blues Band!

Image
Here is an action video of me wearing that leopard 30s pattern I made for shows. I sewed a special fabric tab at the side seam for me to hook my wireless microphone head gear reciever onto. It works out fantastic. I think I am going to be on the lookout for more black/print cottons to make show dresses from. I am partucularly interested in leopards because they match my style and hair color. What would you choose for me to make a "Blues Dress" from? Stormy Monday performed by Suz's Blues Band

You know how you can't UNsee something?

I am making my own cape pattern...

Image
I had one prototype that was too small in the neck. I went and finished it anyway since I can just use the button allowance to give me two more inches of neck room. The finished cape is my prototype. Here are the two pattern pieces. There is a collar piece not shown here. This gray woven silk is going to be the finale. I made the neck bigger and had to add length in the arm area. I failed to calculate that fabric curving over the fat arms will cause you cape to slope up your arm.

My Method for Alteration to remove chest baggyness

Image
1. Trace your pattern. This example shows a bodice where the sleeves are part of instead of sewn on. 2. Extend your waist dart to the bust point. Original waist dart is in blue. Extension is in green. 3. Draw a line from mid shoulder to bust dart. 4. Cut out the waist dart and remove it. It looks like a piece of pie. 5. Slash all the way down your new line from bust point to shoulder. 6. Overlap the chest as much as you want. If you can pinch an inch on your test pattern, then take 1 inch overlap. 7. Tape overlap in place. 8. True up your shoulder line so it's straight. Now you have a bigger waist dart that will suck in that extra fabric that was messing up your pretty bust line!

"The only way to fit a long garment is if the model is thin and tall"

Image
That is the biggest load of bullshit I ever heard. What the fuck is wrong with people who REFUSE To learn how to sew in a NORMAL size? The whiney ass punk on this season's project runway made a woman cry because she was not dressform size and repeatedly pointed out that he couldn't do his best work for her because of her size and the accesories were too small. He just couldn't sew for her! And he wouldn't shutup about it either! Here is an explaination I read as to why clothes are still "drafted" in size zero, while the magazines and the rest of the clothing market are trending towards non-runway models: "People that pick up magazines are consumers. They want to see people that relate to them, which will make the consumer more eager to buy products. But designers are showing their garments to the majority crowd who are mostly retailers. The collections are also considered drafts, and those drafts are fitted to a mannequin that is size 0 or 2 dress size,”

More Video of My Handmade Dress in Action While I Burn the Strings off My Guitar

Yea, it's a long title, but it's accurate. I had to think of what my handmade dress of choice would be to shoot HD video of my Blues band. I chose the "Liz Taylor goes to Japan" dress. Check it out here. The song is called  "You Can Have My Husband" written in 1960 by Dorothy LaBostrie More info about my band on  my website http://www.suzsbluesband.com/  or on Facebook as facebook.com/SuzsBlues

Finishing the last touches

Image
Like how the buttons match? I picked them up randomly lady week for a $1 per three. Turns out they match this fabric! The belt only goes from the side to front so the back looks unbelted.

On the sewing table this week...

This is some really cool fabric I found at Joann Fabrics locally. It has such a mid century feel. I probably will look like Ronald McDonald in this with my red hair but who gives a shit, it will make you want a hamburger and I will supply the shake, baby. This is a pattern I've made a few times before, if it ain't broke, I don't fix it.

Finished 30s wrap dress

This dress is for my Blues Band shows. My guys wear black bowling shirts with leopard collar and trim. So I made this gorgeous dress from a 30s pattern using leopard ombré cotton. You will see photos of me in this when I get the pro photographer to shoot the band next month.
